Well, it was bound to happen eventually. We saw how magnificently popular and sexy the “Jungle Girl” and “Cavewoman” comics have been over the years, and that folks love a scantily-clad, tribal, buxom, yet impetuous, courageous and mighty heroine.
And so “Island Girls” was born.
Keep an eye on this one, gang. We promise you’re going to admire it. ♥
We’re letting Ralph, our talented artiste, storyboard, which he loves to do for movies. We want to do something a little different with this webcomic and it involves perspectives much like you would see if you were watching a movie. The pacing might not be what you expect, but just bear with us. This is our first webcomic designed from the ground up, with no stories or art we can refer to. We didn’t want the same “The Depths” adventure, after all, did we?
Judging by the way Huana treats her lover, you can tell she is bold, impetuous, and a little wild. She’s the first island girl we’ll be introduced to, and this is a short vignette story just for her. ♥ Jack is just along for a ride and it will, sadly, be brief.
Underwater art is a personal love of ours. There’s so much challenge to get it looking just right, and it’s absolutely spectacular when you can see results like this.
Reminder: The “<>” around the dialogue indicate the language being spoken is not English. It could possibly be French or a native Polynesian language like Tahitian. We keep it in English for the fun. 😀
Bora Bora, in the early part of World War 2, served as a fuel depot and resting place for countless ships and planes returning to or heading into battle. The project, Operation Bobcat, actually helped keep war away from the French Polynesian islands, and was instrumental in swaying momentum to the Allies to win the war in the Pacific.
And this is what Leilani and Kalea are speaking of now. We’ll revisit this and you’ll see a lot more exposition later.
Have you ever wanted to try free-diving? It’s quite a challenge. It’s not just not breathing that’s a problem, but as Leilani is finding out, the water can punish your body quite a bit with pressure. Your lungs constrict further as the water gets colder, and pretty soon that breath you’re trying to hold, well, you can’t anymore.
This is how pearl divers die. So, yeah, maybe you might want to avoid this particular hobby. Stick with needlepoint. Or video games.

While we were thinking about how we wanted to lay this out, we were trying to think of the nighttime and what it might have been like, with such activity going on back then. Operation Bobcat was in full swing by this time. We wanted to express again how important it was for the girls (okay, women), to be mostly naive about everything going on. Not everyone was all that welcoming to the military back then.
And it makes perfect sense for these women not to embrace this “Westernization” of their lives. This is why “Island Girls” will delight, keeping things in non-English and letting these brave, skilled, if not naive, ladies run the show. This is the comic heroine type we’ve been pining for for decades, and we’re so glad to have Roy Wolverine on board to bring it to life.
